Interview with Gavin Noble – TT Series
Another interview in the TT Series of interviews, this time from Elite Triathlete Gavin Noble. Gavin was short, sweet and straight to the point which can be really refreshing in a set of interviews like this right? Enjoy!
What does your training consist of?
Swimming, cycling and running ! Depending on the time of year I have different focuses but in general I try to have a balance with a lot of aerobic work
Can you recommend any specific type of training for beginner triathletes?
I coach a group of triathletes and all I preach is consistency – especially in the pool – if you leave your swim for too long it is very hard to get it back on track
How do you balance training / competing with family / personal time?
I am not sure I am very good at that ! ONCE upon a time I had a girlfriend !
Do you follow a specific diet for training / racing?
Not really, if the furance is kept hot everything gets burnt. I do watch my weight though – if I get light my run times come down but then my swim suffers . . . theres a balance there, for me around 74kg
How did you transition from an Age Grouper to a Pro?
I have yet to compete as an age grouper – the ITU brought in Elite U-23 divison after I left the junior ranks. I don’t know where Age groupers get their energy from with the amount of training some do alongside working in the real world – I am not would be able to do it !
And how did you first get sponsored?
I wrote some letters, annoyed a lot of people, managed to find someone having a good day . . . same as everyone else ?
What is your favorite race? And a quick why?
I love to race at home in Ireland. I don’t get to that too much anymore so I always look forward to going home. Triathlone which is next years European Championships is my favourite race
And what is your ultimate goal?
When it comes to me joining the real world I want to look back and say I did everything I could to be the best that I could be, that, and London 2012 of course.
Finally, do you have any tips for new or intermediate Triathletes? Maybe something you wish someone would have told you sooner. Or specifically for the swim, bike, run transitions and equipment?
Do everything sooner rather than later – hydrate, rest, eat, train, register, bike maintenance, rest, put petrol in the car, read the map, book flights, rest . . .
