Sprint training does make race day easier in that you can sustain a faster pace and feel more comfortable.  The heart rate, max heart rate and heart rate reserve (HRR) are the underlying factors affected by sprint training.  Those doing sprint training can use a heart rate monitor to track progress- you will see your heart rate drop during higher intensity runs.
